a smile never hurts

Always keep a grin handy!

CAREGIVER NOTE:
The bird feeder has been a good distraction now that the birds have discovered it — and the bird field guide was a great one to thumb through last evening. He recognized several species in the book and asked about a few of them he named and where they might be in the book. He enjoyed that hour or so perusing the pages.

CAREGIVER NOTES:
Fixations — up during the night wondering why it was dark and was certain we had let him miss his appointment for a haircut.

His balance has improved some which is good and he is somewhat able to take care of some personal hygiene a little better at the moment. PT evaluation on Friday for progress and to make sure he can continue for another 6 week cycle to help build the muscle around the hip which is still very atrophied. He’s really hoping to dump “George” (his walker), which according to one dr was not sounding like it would be a possibility. We’ll see what the hip surgeon says next week.

every moment…

Make the most of each new beginning.

CAREGIVER NOTE:

Yesterday was certainly one for the books – it was a day filled with laughter and a few tears. Some deep breathing too. We’ve had the same conversation over the last week and a half. He’s thinking that he should be able to drive – however, there are a multitude of reasons why he shouldn’t. Yesterday during one of our more light hearted conversations about the subject, he stated that “90 year olds shouldn’t drive. And I’m 70, so that doesn’t apply to me.” Ummm, not quite, I said. What year were you born? He replied with the correct year. What year is it now? He answered. Yep, I said, if you subtract 1932 from 2022 you’ll get your age. “That can’t be!” was his answer! “How did I get that old? I can’t be 90! It’s impossible.”

We’ll leave this here for now, but the story isn’t done yet.

words…

Shift the dynamics of the day with the words you use.

June 21st, Day 11 – PT, Shower and Shave were the order for the day. We got all by the shave in. I think he’s missing the whiskers he wore for the last 3 years. Flexibility is the key word for us at the moment. He really gets along with the Physical therapist and there were a few stories exchanged during the 40 minute session. Thankfully, he gets along with the CNA as well…
